Ven Sokhim - School Worker

Smiling teacher in white t-shirt stands in front of colorful classroom learning charts.

This is Ven Sokhim.

She is Sow's mother.

Ven Sokhim is deaf and unable to speak. She is a widow, raising her young son alone, and lives in Level 1 poverty—the highest level of poverty in Cambodia.

To survive, she has begged on the streets or worked up to 10 hours a day on construction sites, shovelling and mixing concrete by hand for just $5 a day, often without even basic safety equipment.

Because of their disabilities and extreme poverty, Ven Sokhim and Sow are among the most vulnerable people in our community. Sadly, people with disabilities are too often ignored, exploited, or taken advantage of, leaving them at even greater risk.

Today marks a new beginning.

The Sorn Foundation has offered Ven Sokhim regular work at our school. She will receive a small daily living allowance, a nutritious meal each day, and the opportunity to learn new skills. Most importantly, she and Sow will spend their days in a safe, caring environment where they are protected, valued, and treated with dignity.

This is about so much more than a job.

It is about giving a vulnerable mother the chance to provide for her child with dignity. It is about keeping a little boy safe. It is about replacing fear with hope.

Your support makes stories like this possible. Together, we can protect those who need us most and give families like Ven Sokhim and Sow the future they deserve. ❤️
